This one first... because growing up,hell, through the time I was in college, I went often went fishing with my dad. And we often caught catfish. And if any of the catfish were still alive when we got home, my mom made us put them in a bathtub full of water. And if they were still alive by the time dad was done cleaning the other fish, we had to take the live fish back down to the more local river and release them. What can I say? My mom has a soft spot for catfish. So pics of catfish in bathtubs bring back good memories for me! rofl...

HP Crafting

So, last night while on the northside, I found myself shopping. I went in Michaels Crafts (which only proved to me how much more I perfer JoAnns, or ordering stuff online). Only bought a couple skeins of Bernat Bamboo yarn (because it is soft beyond belief).

Then I went in Books-a-Million (which reminded me of how much more I like Barnes & Noble, or just ordering books on Amazon). I bought more in there. About 6 novels. (Sadly, without going to look at the bag, I can't remember what, other than it included Shannon McKenna's newest). Then I wandered over into the craft books section, and found one I couldn't pass up.

So, I shelled out retail, non-discount for:

I don't buy knitting books very often (I have all the basic references I need, and I mostly make up my own patterns. Same goes for crochet.) But this one was too much of a temptation. There are actually a bunch of nice patterns in it. And many are just nice, basic patterns that can be used for any yarns, and not necessarily HP specific. And yes, of course, I could figure out the HP scarves without a pattern. They're really quite simple. BUT, it's nice to have a pattern for gauge reference, and yarn yardage needed. Plus, it saves me from having to count. (And I'm not a fan of math, so things that save me counting are awesome. lol.)

Also, there's a sweater pattern in it, the one for "Molly 's Amazing Technicolor Housecoat" that I am going to have to make for myself one of these days!!! :-) It's amazing. But, before I get to that point. there's lots of other neat stuff in it. Plus, a nice, simple lacy shawl pattern, that I see many applications for.

So that's my crafty-buying lately. Oh, except for hopping over to KnitPicks today to order some more Harmony Woods interchangables, now that they're finally back in stock. Other than that I've been good. (For the most part... rofl....)

Bring on the Weekend

Seriously, bring it on!!! Come on, 4:00 p.m. I need a weekend. :-D

Not that I have a whole ton planned for the weekend, because I don't. But, I need those 2 days of the week when I do not have to get up at any certain time, and can wake up on my own. Yes, I need that.

Also, I have a To Do List that I need to start tackling (before it's been around so long it evolves, grows limbs, and decides to tackle me).

Weekend To Do List:

Go through yarn stash. Remove project leftovers that aren't likely to be used for other things, sock yarns, any other really thin yarns that aren't good for double-stranding. Photograph and list on Ebay.
Go through pen-paling supplies. Anything that isn't good for collage type projects, or just isn't wanted any more, remove. Decide what to do with.
Put away 2 to 3 loads of clean laundry sitting in hall.
Give self pedicure. (Sandal season isn't that far off... time to stop ignoring the feet.)
Deal with misc clutter in bedroom.
Gather up unwanted books, photograph, and list on Ebay.
Get mail ready for Monday.
Knit (this is probably the easiest bit, and can be done on Sunday, while watching Nascar).
Find way to fit recent yarn purchases into usual stash storage (again, hoping what's removed leaves room to add stuff).

Must dedicate myself to this nice, big cup of coffee. Because, without caffeine, I'm pretty sure this day is going to stall fast. :-S

Not a whole lot going on around here. It's absolutely frigid, after being slightly warmer, and almost tolerable, over the weekend. Apparently, mother nature listens to the groundhog, and we are going to have the full 6 more weeks of winter. Though, you have to wonder which groundhog she's listening to. Good ol' Phil in Pennsylvania saw his shadow, thus dooming us to six more weeks of winter. But his southern counterpart, who I believe is named General Beauregard Lee, didn't see his shadow, and predicted an early spring. This either means the groundhogs are not agreeing, or it means mother nature is paying more attention to Phil, or it means the South is going to get an early spring, and the rest of the country is going to freeze as long as possible.

You can tell I'm sleep deprived when I'm contemplating the implications of disagreeing groundhogs.

(By the way, has any one else ever wondered how on earth the poor groundhog in PA is ever not going to see his shadow, considering how many bright television lights they shine on him? To mention the pompous looking local representatives (mayor and whomever) that stand around and look self important, while the guy reaches in and pull the poor groundhog out? Ya know, I think one of these years, right before they all get there for the festivities, they should pull the groundhog out, put him somewhere nice and safe and warm. And then replace the groundhog with a badger, and the let the festivities commence. Yes, it might get a little messy, and perhaps it would no longer be an all ages appropriate event. But, still, I'd like to see the animals get even with the humans from time to time.)

God of Terrible Advertising and Fractured Grammar Strikes Again!

So, yesterday I mentioned my loathing of the the "Ranch Hand Fillet" (which was a the name of a steak plate at one of the chain eateries a couple years ago). Because the fractured English of that name just gave me the creeps. Of course, as time went on, whenever I saw the ad, I found myself saying to whomever was around, "Gee, I wonder if they asked the Ranch Hand how he feels about that?"

Well, apparently I invoked the God of Terrible Advertising and Fractured Grammar (always one to be feared) by mentioning this. I was watching TV last night after I got home, and saw a ad for one of the chain steak houses... I think it was LoneStar, but it might have been one of the others. Anyways, get what they've come up with now? The Renegade Steak.

Yep, you read right: the Renegade Steak.

This is the sort of thing that makes the editor in me weep. First of all, either of two ways to interpret this, takes you to mental places you don't want to go.

Interpretation #1 - it's a steak cut from a Renegade (i.e., in the same manner as one would say Beef Steak, Tuna Steak, etc. etc.). Taking that a step further, Renegade is a term that usually, historically anyway, applies to a person. (I realize it's now used on animals, sealife, germs, and all sorts of other things. And that's fine. I have not particular issue with that. But the point is, first thing you think of is a human.) So, in the fine tradition of the Ranch Hand Fillet, we're back to cannibalism again.

Interpretation #2 - the steak itself is a Renegade. Or, the steak has gone Renegade. Frankly, I don't want to my food attributed with human characteristics, thank you very much. Further more, what exactly does a steak do, once it goes Renegade? Does it hunt down and torment vegetarians? Does it go vigilante on cattle ranchers and attempt to murder them with their own branding irons? Does it buy itself a few acres somewhere and set up a chicken farm? Does it head off to Hollywood to star in a B movie called "Attack of the Killer Steak"?

I swear to christ, proof I went into the wrong business. The easy money, where accuracy really makes little difference, in advertising or meteorology. (Afterall, how often do the weather forecasting types on the news screw up, and yet they're still employed!)

Installment 1million and 1 of "The World Needs an Editor"

I know, I know. I nit pick these things. But, it's an occupational hazard. I get paid to be a big ol' english/grammar nerd. Therefore, sometimes it carries over.

And, I will freely admit, I know what the writer meant for this headline to mean, but that is not how it comes across.

The headline reads: "25-million-year-old fossil shows bats developed flight before sonar"

This isn't as bad as the famous "Ranch-hand filet", but it's pretty bad.

(That damn commercial, for either Applebees or Chilis, whichever did the ranch-hand filet? Yeah, it drove me nuts. I won't get into it, but Ranch-hand filet is one of the more annoying butcherings of the English language of the past few years for me.)

Science Will Explain Away Everything...

... this article is laughable.. Science Explains Fairy Tales.

It reminds me of a line in a book I read. It was talking about ghosts and spirits, and yes, this was a fiction novel. But the line has stayed with me. Basically, the scientist type character had come up with this long, scientific explanation of an incident the other characters thought was a ghost incident. And the other character (a cool character... a scientist himself, but an avant garde, free thinking one) said (and I'm paraphrasing here, because I don't remember exactly): There are various explanations for any thing that happens. That doesn't mean any of them are the true explanation. They're all possible. But that doesn't mean the mystery has been solved. (Basically the idea being, unless there's irrefutable proof, various explanations are possible, both scientific and paranormal. And there's no way to be sure which is the correct explanation.)

Anyways, I just find this hilarious.

The age of science and reason. I think to some extent, science has caused more problems than it fixed.

What do I mean? That now, as a society, we believe that only the scientific answer is correct. And that science is to be believed in all instances. And if you can't touch it, and if science doesn't vindicate it, it must not be real.

Give me a break.

Once again, the arrogance of mankind is staggering.

Last night I caught a break when my brother got out early. Which was nice. So no doubt, he'll be late getting out tonight, just to make up for it, and I'll end up not getting home until after 11:30. ugh.

Meanwhile, to tell you we're all a little stressed, and silly, and strange around here right now, I'll give you some quotes from the ride home last night.

My week from hell last week? Seems to be it's decided to turn into the 2 weeks from hell. This week looks to be a continuation of last week. Perhaps worse.

Any body remember those commercials in the 80's for Excedrin, and it was Excedrin Headache # - whatever? I feel like my life is just a running series of those commercials. I am, apparently, in the process of discovering whole new headaches. I honestly don't know whether to go take a couple advil/tylenol/whatevers to knock this headache back, or whether I should just smash my head into a wall and knock myself unconscious for a while. Ugh...

I won't utter that phrase what always invokes Murphy's Law, but I'm definitely thinking it right now.
